National Junior League - Saturday 5th November 2011
Blitz Show Good Performances at NJL
Last weekend Blitz TTC made their first outing of the season to what is the first of four weekends down in Wellingborough for
the National Junior League. 18 Teams from across the country came to the central venue of Westfield Table Tennis Club to battle
it out to be crowned National Junior League Champions for the Westfield Region. The format is slightly different to the one that
we have played in, in previous years. With promotion and relegation for the first two weekends and there after the divisions
being fixed with each team playing each other twice over the last two weekends.
Blitz A were put into the top division by the organiser and got a bit of a shock against a very strong Draycott A team. Blitz A lost
6-0, however, against a team consisting of former top 30 junior Alistair Hawthorn, I suppose that was to be expected. Blitz B on
the other hand were put into division 3 for this first weekend and got off to a flying start, recording a 4-2 win over Werrington
Two + Two, with Laurence Sobieraj remaining undefeated over his two matches.
Round 2 saw Blitz A record a 4-2 loss against the winning team from last year, Bedford Modern A. However, Steven Johnson
recorded an excellent 3-1 win over Sahad Ahmed, who is ranked well over 200 places higher than Steve. Jacob Marshall also
recorded a good 3-1 win over Scott Neave but unfortunately neither could make a double and win their second match of the
game, both losing 3-2. Blitz B, however, continued their good form winning their second match of the day 5-1 against Bedford
Modern B. With excellent wins from both Reece Simpson and Jack Senescall it was a fantastic team performance.
Round 3 saw Blitz B thrash Westfield B 5-1, with an outstanding win for Reece Simpson over Alfie Wright, winning 3-2, 16-14 in
the deciding game! Laurence Sobieraj recorded a solid two wins for the team, with Jack Senescall chipping in with one. Blitz A
however, were up against their closest rival Ancaster and what a heated encounter it was. With every match, bar one, going to
the deciding game, the match could have gone either way. Unfortunately it went 4-2 Ancaster’s way, but with good
performances from Jacob Marshall and Karl Wynne, it could so easily have been a 6-0 win for Blitz!
Round 4 this time saw Blitz B come up against an extremely strong Wensum team, who hadn’t dropped a single end all day.
Unfortunately the Blitz team couldn’t step it up and got beaten comfortably 6-0. Blitz A were also struggling against a strong
Rugby A team and also went down 6-0, but with some good performances from all three lads, things weren’t all doom and
gloom.
The final rounds saw a fantastic win for Blitz B beating Draycott C 5-1 with outstanding performances from Reece and Laurence.
Jack just missed out to a very talented young man, but made up for his loss with a fine 3-1 win over Draycotts number 2. Blitz
A on the other hand went down 4-2 to Werrington Aces, but with outstanding performances from Steven Johnson and Karl
Wynne to beat players much higher than them in the rankings, put a sweater taste to the defeat.
Overall this meant that Blitz B were promoted from division 3 and Blitz A were relegated from division 1. However, all 6 lads
played extremely well and should be extremely proud of their efforts across the day. Bring on Sat 26th November!
